This sort of thing is going on in many industries. I believe this corporate "fad" has been going on for about twenty years and has been accelerating ever since.

A multibillion dollar corporation I work for for 15 years started it about 1991 or so. The company is unrecognizable to what it was in 1981. By comparison it was an "Olympic athlete" back then, now I'm reminded of an epileptic killing snakes. They bought out or ran off their experience with the idea that the company could replace an experienced workforce by running inexperienced trainees through a two week training course.

They were wrong, and they are paying for it in many ways now.
