Default Editorial: Wrong time for immigration fight in Novato

Editorial: Wrong time for immigration fight in Novato

THE NOVATO City Council has worked hard to stay focused during these trying times.
The council's agenda is dominated by the difficult task of cutting city services and programs in order to balance its budget. It also has key planning issues that need to be addressed.

What Novato City Hall doesn't need, especially right now, is a highly politicized debate over a proposal aimed at trying to stop people from hiring illegal immigrants. Immigration is an important national issue that's not going to be solved by this City Council.

But advocates focused on the issue want Novato City Hall to join their fight. They argue: "If our national leaders won't do something, we can."

The problem is their "something" may not accomplish anything, but will make City Hall the focus of a national debate when the city has many pressing closer-to-home issues that need to tackled.

Jerome Ghigliotti and Rick Oltman, longtime advocates for the United States getting much tougher on illegal immigration, are circulating an initiative to put a measure before the council that would require businesses that work for the city to run their employees through an Internet identification system to verify that they have legal immigration status.

The cost, they say, would be borne by the employer, not the city.

But the city will pay a high price in the form of a costly political distraction that having a wedge issue such as illegal immigration on its agenda will cause.

If the initiative gets enough signatures, the City Council can agree to adopt the requirement without voter approval. Otherwise, it would be on November's ballot.
Advocates of the measure have provided no proof other than hyberbole and innuendo that city contracts have provided jobs for illegal immigrants.Ê

We wonder why the city should be responsible for monitoring and enforcing immigration laws above legal requirements already on the books. The measure will accomplish little other than to fan local debate that should be taking place in Washington, D.C.

They should be passing around a petition urging action from Rep. Lynn Woolsey, Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein and President Barack Obama.

Instead, their initiative likely will stick Novato taxpayers with the bill for holding an election.

We're not convinced this initiative is worth that cost, let alone diverting energy from more important local issues.

Oltman and Ghigliotti disagree. Ghigliotti says he already has gathered more than half of the signatures needed to put the measure on the ballot. They hope Novato is an early step toward national reform.

This is a time when the city should be focused on balancing its budget - both short- and long-term. This initiative is a bad idea that Novato cannot afford.

Well, from the opinions in the comment section, It's fairly obvious that even one of the most "liberal" Counties in Ca, Citizens are pretty much fed up with the blight of the illegals.

So far this week, in "quaint" lil' Marin, there's been numerous stabbings, robberies, and all of the wonderfull things that come along with the invasion, and the Marin IJ has shut-off all commenting on Their articals, that is when pages of Americans voicing Their opinions took-off, and made it quite well-known Their truly fed up with the illegals.

Alot of GOOD comments, and it's TOPIX, so You don't have to register.

CB.

Wow, if this town pushes this forward and Santa Clarita does the same, that will be a real boost for our side.
