Protests Erupt in Serbian town against immigrants after Gang Rape

The brutal gang rape of a British woman by five Afghan refugees has sparked a massive protest against illegal immigrants in a Serbian spa town.
The 38-year-old woman – who bravely managed to film the attack on her mobile phone – was repeatedly raped after befriending a group of Afghan men in a park in Banja Koviljaca.

Despite handing the video footage to police, only one alleged attacker – identified by police only as Abdurashid D., 25 – has been arrested.
Now local mothers have told police they are boycotting local schools from next week (nov 7) unless they clear out a local refugee centre containing more than 2,500 illegal immigrants which was built to hold just 120.

“These people are always hanging around the parks and streets during the day causing trouble,” said one mum.

“They have no respect for us, no respect for women and we want them gone because they have no right to be here.

“My daughter isn’t going to school again while four refugee rapists are still on the streets,” she added.

The British victim had travelled to Serbia after striking up a Facebook friendship with a man who told her he lived in a town called Lozinca.
When she couldn’t find him, the woman flew on to the spa resort Banja Koviljaca where she began chatting to three Afghan men in a local park.
But when they invited her for a drink at a local hotel, they met up with two other men and she was dragged behind the building and raped repeatedly.
Her harrowing phone video footage of the attack – which was handed to the police – is said by local media to show the faces of three of her attackers clearly.

Police said that Abdurashid D. has admitted sex with the woman, but claims it was consensual, although he was unable to explain medical evidence showing injuries suffered by the woman.

The rape occurred last week (27 Oct), but police only revealed the details after the woman had returned to the UK on Monday.

The case has shocked locals in the region, which is the most popular spa resort in the country and regarded as one of the mainstays of Serbia’s tourism business.

Citizens hold protest against asylum seekers

BANJA KOVILJAČA -- Citizens rallied in the western Serbian town of Banja Koviljača on Sunday, demanding from the authorities to solve the issue of large number of asylum seekers.

Banja Koviljača

Around 500 people gathered in Banja Koviljača downtown. They claim that the asylum seekers are destroying the image of the popular tourist town and are scaring the local residents.

The Banja Koviljača residents have warned that they will not let their children go to school on Monday.

Five Afghanis are suspected of raping a British woman in Banja Koviljača recently. One of the men is currently in custody. The incident has upset the citizens and prompted them to organize the protest.

The organizers point out they are not racists or being intolerant but that they are only requesting from the state to solve the issue of more than 2,500 foreign citizens, mainly from Afghanistan and Somalia, because the Asylum Center in Banja Koviljača only has room for 84 persons.

Boycott of school in asylum seekers town

BANJA KOVILJAČA -- Residents of Banja Koviljača in western Serbia this morning decided not to send their children to school, in protest over "uncontrolled inflow of immigrants".

Local Lotel TV journalist Svetlana Ilić told B92 that only eight out of some 400 students showed up this morning for classes at the town's elementary school.

A committee formed by parents and other citizens on Sunday organized a protest rally against what they said was a large number of foreign immigrants currently housed in that small town.

Banja Koviljača is also a spa and a tourist resort.

The committee will meet again on Monday evening, and will call for the Parents' Council to meet on Tuesday and "decide on the next steps to be taken".

On Sunday, they demanded urgent removal of all illegal immigrants and asylum seekers, as well as the Asylum Center located in the spa.

The protesters called on Interior Minister Ivica Dačuć and Commissioner for Refugees Vladimir Cucić to visit Banja Koviljača and discuss the issue with the citizens.

The rally on Sunday was spurred by a recent incident, when five Afghani immigrants were accused of raping a British woman.

According to police data from the nearby town of Loznica, the Asylum Center - which has the capacity to house 80 persons - is currently home to more than 2,500 asylum seekers from Asian and African countries.

The local authorities previously on several occasions turned to the Commissioner for Refugees and Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković for help in resolving the issue, but since there were no concrete steps taken by the state institutions the citizens decided to organize themselves, said reports.

Classes in western town school to resume

SOURCE: TANJUG

BANJA KOVILJAČA -- Primary school students in Banja Koviljača, a spa resort town in western Serbia, will begin attending classes on Monday after a several-day boycott.

The local school's parent council made a decision that their children should get back to school following the conclusions of a meeting between a senior government official and heads of the local-self government.

Serbian Minister of Labor and Social Policy Rasim Ljajić and the heads of the Loznica and Banja Koviljača local self-government met on Thursday to discuss the current issue of illegal immigrants in that region.

Ljajic told the municipal officials that the state was ready to resolve the issue in line with international obligations and to the mutual interest of the Serbian and foreign citizens.

Senior officials of the Interior Ministry, the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees, the city of Loznica and representatives of Banja Koviljača met on the same day and decided on a number of measures to resolve the problem of the huge number of immigrants, nearing 2,500 in a place counting 5,500 people in total.

Loznica mayor Vidoje Petrović told Tanjug Saturday that the immigrants who had been accommodated in the local school would get a new, more humane facility at another location.

Police presence in Banja Koviljača, particularly in the school's vicinity, will be increased, along with strengthened measures to prevent illegal attempts at crossing the border, Petrović said.
