Default Labor Contractor Expects Leniency Deal In Illegal Worker's Death

As is usual, the prosecution evades the illegal entry and work status aspect of this whole affair. Of course it's overshadowed by the untimely and unneccessary death of this poor kid. But what would have prevented it first? She should have been denied employment! this labor contractor doesn't follow proper hiring procedures as the law requires. That's the gateway to employment.

Quote:
Over her family's protests, Maria Isavel went to Putla, about three hours away, where she contacted a smuggler. After one failed attempt of crossing the desert to Arizona, she made it to Phoenix, then joined her fiance in Madera, Calif.

Working in the almond orchards, her fiance, Florentino Bautista, saved enough for a silver engagement ring. But two never married; Maria Isavel, who was two months pregnant, died five days after Mother's Day 2008.

The farce:

Quote:
Elias Armenta, who was the company's former safety coordinator, pleaded guilty to a felony count of failing to follow safety regulations that resulted in death. He was sentenced to 480 hours of community service, five years of probation and a $1,000 fine.
The "minority contractor" who gets additional favoritism points for being a woman and whose brother is Elias Armenta:

Quote:
defendant Maria De Los Angeles Colunga, the owner of now-defunct Merced Farm Labor, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of failing to provide shade. She was given 40 hours of community service and will serve three years of probation and pay a $370 fine.
The ugly truth of the illegal alien trade:

Quote:
"For them, Maria Isavel was only another farm laborer whom they could replace easily,"

There was a protest by this girls relatives on the street in front of the state capitol yesterday. However, the pictures of them and the related story seem to have disappeared from the Sac Bee pages. A search has not been fruitful
