NPR’s Totenberg Apologizes for Christmas
By Don Irvine | December 20, 2010
National Public Radio which came under fire in October for firing commentator Juan Williams has stepped into it again with reporter Nina Totenberg’s apology for having to use the word Christmas.
From Newsbusters
I want to say one thing about the budget that didn’t get passed, the omnibus bill. You know, we talk a lot about – we just passed this huge tax cut in part because business said, you know, we have to plan, we have to know what kind of tax cuts we have. Well, these agencies, including the Defense Department, don’t know how much money they’ve got and for what. And I was at – forgive the expression – a Christmas party at the Department of Justice and people actually were really worried about this. These are law enforcement people don’t know exactly what kind of money they can spend for what.
Totenberg wants us to “forgive the expression” for mentioning a DOJ Christmas party as if it was some sort of dark evil thing that had occurred which was only feeding from her own liberal discomfort for the word Christmas in a very politically world.
She isn’t alone in her discomfort with the word Christmas though. Every year we read more and more stories on the assault on Christmas from children that are forced to attend Winter Solstice parties, having Santa Claus banned or stores that prevent the use of the words “Merry Christmas” being said to their customers over the fear of offending anyone.
Yes we are living in a very multi-cultural world and not everyone celebrates Christmas but that shouldn’t prevent us from backing away from a holiday that is celebrated my millions of people around the world over the unfounded fear that it might offend someone.
The Christmas season is part of the American fabric and to be ashamed of it as is Totenberg is a sad commentary on how far our culture has slid towards political correctness. If Totenberg is so offended by the idea of a “Christmas party” then maybe next year she should protest by skipping them.
