Default LAPD victimizing "honest, hard working immigrants!"

The world (or more specifically, Los Angeles) as interpreted by Angelica Salas and our friends at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights.

Below is a translation of the story by La Opinion, in an article printed on Thursday, 11-11-10.

Except for some discussion of fake IDs and a quote by a "juvenile", the article doesn't mention any of this:

Quote:
$100,000 in cash
Two bags of cocaine
Supplies of condoms
Alcohol (Club 902 has no liquor license)
Dozens of allegedly fake ID's
A missing 17 year old girl

http://derailamnestydotcom.blogspot....s-part-ii.html

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lano...tess-club.html
The online version of the story is much shorter, and a little different. For example, not included in the printed version is this thorny gem:

Quote:
La Opinión intentó obtener una reacción de la oficina del alcalde Antonio Villaraigosa por medio de Matt Szabo, su jefe de personal, pero éste no respondió la llamada.

La Opionion tried to get a comment from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office through Deputy Chief of Staff Matt Szabo, but he hasn't returned the call

I am not fluent, but I believe my translation of the printed version is reasonably accurate.

Redada en un club de baile sigue en misterio

Mas de 80 mujeres inmigrates fueron arrestadas el fin de semana; autoridades policias aun no revelan the detalles

(Raid on dance club is a continuing mystery

More than 80 women were arrested at the end of the week; police authorities don't even give the details)

Local human rights groups question the participation of the LAPD in a dance club raid in the Los Angeles down town area which resulted in the arrest of 81 female undocumented immigrants who worked at the place.

Seven men were also arrested, but there are no details of specific charges against them.

The raid on Club 907, at 9th street and Hill down town, happened last Saturday. Since then, LAPD has given very little information , and four days later are still “preparing a statement”, repeated on several occasions during the day according to various LAPD spokesmen called by La Opinion.

“The supervisor hasn't approved the statement” said Lieutenant John Romero. “I'm Sorry”.

Until yesterday, very little official information was given by LAPD Lieutenant Paul Vernon when he declared to a news agency on Monday that those detained were arrested on suspicion of prostitution, immoral conduct, illegally employed and using false identification. Supposedly there was a three month undercover investigation.

He also said that the arrested women were presumably “trafficked into the United States and forced to work at the club”.

*[I'm not sure about the beginning of the next paragraph, the meaning of some of these words in the context and phrasing are not completely familiar to me, the way it's constructed -

-> No obstante, los unicos afectados paracen haber sido las personas arrestadas ←

->However, it seems to the arrested persons that they are affected the same way <-?

Doesn't make sense to me in the context of the paragraph – perhaps it's comparing being arrested and jailed with being kidnapped and forced into labor]*.

However, No obstante, los unicos afectados paracen haber sido las personas arrestadas, the club was functioning normally, and Tuesday morning had a post on Craigslist that said “We are looking for female dance companions for a dance hall in central Los Angeles, dancing and talking only with the customers, no alcohol sales, English speaking not required.” There was also a similar sign posted on the door of the club.

Jorge Mario Cabrera, spokesman for Human Rights for Immigrants in Los Angeles (CHIRLA) said that the organization is interviewing the women that remain free on bail and are in contact with the other's families that are still detained.

“We have interviewed more than 20 of those women and intend to speak with the others. We have eight attorneys on how many of those cases we can help, above all they have critical cases involving (women with) small children who are US Citizens” said Cabrera. “We have a concern that the LAPD supposedly had an investigation concerning crimes against these women (exploitation) and ended up arresting them for not having papers. Why did LAPD act as immigration officers when special order 40 forbids it?”

According to statements by some of the women and families, LAPD officers acted on the principle of legal residency by separating those who had papers and those who didn't.

Wilma L. (fictional name) bailed out at dawn on Sunday after her family borrowed thousands of dollars to acquire a bail bond.

“At first they made us wait and later asked for those who had good papers to be processed first, said 29 year old Wilma. “Later we were taken [nos llevaron] to an office at Tercera (Third) and Wall where they photographed us and processed us four at a time to give our information to an immigration agent.”

Now Wilma is again in her house with her five year old son, but has an [interview date with immigration authorities or immigration court date], a Los Angeles [county Superior] court date and a debt for her bail. She has a charge of employment with fraudulent documents without LEO discovery of fake identification, but “because they viewed my work application, they took our (personnel files?) and saw that we had presented an ID.”

According to various statements by the women to the activists, the agents reviewed the employee files then contacted ICE about the raid(s) on business.

The (female) juvenile explained that the women there (in the club) work dancing by the hour with customers and that “we are not prostitutes, there is no privacy to do anything, the majority have spouses and children, and we are treated like criminals (by the police).”

Cabrera, of CHIRLA, said on his part that if there are people who committed criminal acts “we don't pretend to say that that there weren't any of those arrested, but the truth is that the majority of those arrested are women without papers.”

One waiting husband is Arturo, who argues that he is taking care of their two month old baby while his wife Irma is still in jail.

“They found a fake ID, but it was used for work and for no other reason” according to Arturo. “I'm forced to lose days on the job in order to care for the baby because my sister in law can't care for the baby either. I'm looking to lose my job also.”

Arturo was a frequent client of the club, where the girls danced by the hour which was changed to a fixed rate (for the customers or the girls?). But he was enamored by Irma and they married.

“It's a hard job, a dancer is punished by having to stay on the job from noon until 2am if they don't make the minimum required minutes. They are required to dance and charge1200 minutes per week and if they (the girls) don't make (twenty hours of charged time) they have to pay them (the club) 30 dollars an hour out of their salary”, according to Arturo.

The charge of identity theft by undocumented persons is a way to be deported. Angelica Salas, Executive director of CHIRLA, criticized information management and also the action taken by LAPD.

“The large majority of the women who work in Club 907 are honest workers like anyone else: they struggle to put bread on the family table. If they (the business) committed an error to have employees in an establishment without any benefits and impose ridiculous quotas, maybe there will be illegals too".

You want illegals gone? Run people like this out of town and into jail.

Where's ICE and the Attorney General concerning these people knowingly hiring illegals?

I googled Goliath inc.
