Default Hundreds of protesters greet President Obama

Hundreds of protesters greet President Obama

Apr. 21, 2011

The Associated Press

CULVER CITY, Calif. -- Several hundred protesters gathered outside Sony Studios Thursday where President Barack Obama attended two fundraisers to voice their opinions on a range of issues.

Chanting "Obama, keep your promise," demonstrators demanded immigration reform, tax increases for the rich, and an end to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A group of Armenian-Americans also called on Obama to officially recognize the mass killings of Armenians under Ottoman rule as genocide.

Carlos Amador, 26, an undocumented graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, said he came to urge Obama to sign an executive order stopping the deportation of undocumented students and to allow them to receive U.S. work permits.

"I'm not able to vote but I have friends and relatives who can and they're very disillusioned by his immigration policies," Amador said.

Student Felipe Escobar, 23, recently legalized his immigration status and said next year will be his first time being eligible to vote.

"Obama has to step it up to get my vote next year," he said.

Other demonstrators expressed disapproval over Obama's economic policies.

Holding a sign that read, "Wall Street Created the Recession, Now Make Them Pay," Alvaro Maldonado, 58, a former bus driver who has been unemployed for the past three years, said he believes Obama has done more to help corporations than for the working class.

"He represents Wall Street, he is not looking out for working people," Maldonado said.

The protests were peaceful and police said there were no arrests.

The president's stop in Culver City was part of a three-day trip to the West to pitch his prescription for reducing the deficit by $4 trillion over 12 years through a combination of spending cuts and tax increases for the rich.

Obama once promised to tackle immigration reform in his first 100 days, but has pushed back that timetable several times.

Last month, he hosted a bipartisan summit at the White House to address the country's broken immigration system. He promised to continue working to build a bipartisan consensus around immigration and said he would lead a civil debate on the issue in the months ahead.
