Lake Elsinore to wrestle with illegal immigration at tonight’s city council meeting
Two items on tonight’s Lake Elsinore city council agenda address illegal immigration.
Lake Elsinore appears ready to join the Southwest Riverside cities of Menifee and Hemet in taking up the issue of illegal immigration.
Two items on tonight’s Lake Elsinore city council agenda address illegal immigration. According to the agenda, council will consider the utilization of the E-Verify Program in its city; council will also consider whether to adopt a proclamation that supports the “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neiqhborhoods Act” (Arizona SB 1070).
E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration. It allows an employer, using information reported on an employee’s Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to determine the eligibility of that employee to work in the United States. The Menifee City Council recently took up the issue after a meeting in which supporters of the proposal strongly urged the city to use the system.
Arizona’s SB 1070 makes it a state misdemeanor for an immigrant to be in Arizona without carrying registration documents required by federal law. The act also authorizes state and local law enforcement of federal immigration laws, and cracks down on those sheltering, hiring and transporting illegal immigrants.
Hemet is one step closer to throwing its support behind Arizona SB 1070: According to the agenda for Hemet’s June 22 City Council meeting, the council will vote on whether to adopt resolution bill no. 10-023 that calls for support of Arizona’s SB 1070 illegal immigration law.
Among other things, resolution 10-023 states that “the City Council of the City of Hemet stands with the people of Arizona and applauds the State of Arizona and Governor Jan Brewer for its recent action to protect and defend its citizens, our country, and the sovereignty of the United States of America.”
If the Hemet City Council passes its proposed resolution tonight, it will join Yorba Linda in becoming the only other California city to formally support SB 1070.
Menifee has also taken a stand on illegal immigration. During its June 16 city council meeting, the council unanimously agreed to draft a resolution that will formally denounce California cities that boycott Arizona because of its SB 1070 immigration reform bill.
At the June 16 meeting, the Menifee council was also unified in its decision to reaffirm its unanimous March 3 vote that paved the way for the E-Verify process to be embedded into the city’s business licensing program.Lake
The open portions of both the Lake Elsinore City Council meeting and the Hemet City Council meeting are scheduled in their respective cities at 7 p.m. tonight; the public is invited to comment during the public comments portion of the meeting.
