Suspect in gang slayings arrested in Mexico
The FBI announced Friday night the arrest of a fourth suspect in the July 2000 slayings of four people in San Bernardino.
Froylan Chiprez, 36, of Mexico, was taken into custody in Tijuana by Mexican police, the FBI said in a news release. He was arrested on a provisional arrest warrant issued by the Mexican government.
Chiprez was wanted in the July 9, 2000, gang-related homicides that came to be known as the Dead Presidents slayings. Three suspects have already been tried and convicted of murder, the FBI said.
Chiprez, who was on parole in California for involuntary manslaughter at the time of the killings, slipped across the border to his native Mexico, the FBI said.
The FBI's Inland Regional Apprehension Team, working with Mexican police and justice officials, got the provisional warrant based on a U.S. federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid confinement.
The FBI said that once Mexican authorities return him to the United States, Chiprez will be turned over to San Bernardino police to answer to state murder charges in the 2000 slayings.
