Villaraigosa has ordered the immediate layoffs
This was reported on ABC news today:
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has ordered the immediate layoffs of 1,000 city employees to help balance the city's budget. The mayor ordered the positions eliminated Thursday, a day after the city council voted unanimously to postpone any action on job cuts for 30 days while they explore other options.

I wonder if Villaraigosa is now feeling the difference between decades past college Mecha fueled Chicano idealism and the present unpleasant reality of being the somewhat impotent top cheese "force for change" in the City of Los Angeles.
