Default DREAM Act Effects Can Be Mitigated

If the DREAM act manages to squeek through both houses, it doesn't have to play out in the worst case scenarios that we have foretold when arguing with fence sitters and oppositional activists.

The next congress holds a bit more promise in reeling in our out of control immigration system. For instance, as the code is written now, newly amnestied ....uh...students could sponsor other family members, spurring the feared "chain migration" that causes a 5 to ten fold increase in legal immigration. We could lobby congress to change that portion of the code before the newly legalized could make use of it. In addition, Congress could revisit the enforcement portion of removals to clear out more non-DREAM'ers to make an impact on the overall quantity of foreigners here. It's a numbers game to some degree; amnesty for 2 million, deportation for 5 or 6 million others.
The point is, we still have options and a more promising future. Look for strategies we can use to impact our goal. Overall, we want less illegals and lower immigration from already abusive countries. If the DREAM act passes, we should hold it over the heads of whatever sympathizers we do have in both houses as an indebtedness. For every DREAM act stepchild we legalize, we demand 5 illegals be deported. Don't let's get demoralized by this if it comes to pass. Congress is fluid, as is most of what they do. We just have to learn how to shape fluid medium to our advantage.

The McCain-Kennedy bill passed the house but died in the senate, even with the support of the President. This one will too.

That was an entirely different bill though. This one has a marketing edge that McCain-Kennedy didn't enjoy

Yes. The passage of this thing is just more hypnosis.

Even if they get everything they want in this act, all that is necessary is to break the intense focus on it by explaining what it really is.

Remember, "amnesty" is just that, it is immunity from prosecution for commiting some crime. The crime still exists. Illegal immigration still exists and the people seeking amnesty will be admited criminals. This lets them stay in the country legally, that's all. It doesn't make them US citizens. It doesn't make them immune to deportation.

This amnesty is going to exist for only some finite number of individuals but we are never, not even for a second, removed from the basic problem. We still have to confront illegals in the US and it will be inevitable that there is only one real solution: Hunting them down and throwing them out.

Amnesty is not going to stop illegal immigration, and in fact, right now, it will stimulate more illegal immigration as more outside the country struggle to get in and take advantage of it. Now is a good time to break focus on this act and focus instead on enforcement. Amnesty for most illegals will be just more unwanted attention. They have already got all the amnesty they want and this act might just slow things down for them.

And also, since this many admited criminals will now be here legally, just like their great-great-great-grandparents under Reagan, then we really need to come to terms with the reality that the problem is not illegals alone anymore, but anyone residing in the US who is not a citizen.

If you are not a citizen in the US, then you need to get out. The US is for its citizens only, nobody else. Everyone else is a guest and mostly they are overstaying their welcome.
