Romney walks softly and leaves the big stick home on illegal immigration
The cool as a cucumber Michelle Bachmann is long gone. Now, the steely strong willed Rick Santorum has joined her in the former presidential candidate club.
Bachmann was, unquestionably and by a wide margin, the preferred candidate for conservative values, especially on illegal immigration. Santorum stepped up his game as his campaign gained steam, clarifying his views on illegal immigration just enough to give us hope, even if he fell short of the standard set by the congresswoman from Minnesota.
Where does this leave patriotic Americans determined to end the free meal which is illegal immigration? Sadly, we're left picking up the check yet again, with no choice other than Romney for those holding conservative values.
A quick look at the most recent ratings of the remaining candidates by Numbers USA shows what we already know, that Mitt Romney is the only choice. The other two GOP hopefuls, Newt “Mr. Humane” Gingrich and Ron “The Nutty Professor” Paul, have been given D and D- ratings, respectively, on the issue of illegal immigration whereas Romney has been upgraded to a B-. Obama's grade, at an F-, couldn't get much worse if he tried.
On face value, Romney's grade doesn't seem like a source for worry but a closer inspection of the components used to derive Numbers USA's final grade reveals a few areas of concern. The perfectly coiffed former Massachusetts' governor scored the highest rating (Excellent) in five categories, Opposing Amnesty/Legalization, Mandating E-Verify, Securing the Borders, Supporting Local law Enforcement, and Punishing Business Violators. But he's been nearly silent on two critical issues, Ending Chain Migration and Ending Birthright Citizenship.
Chain migration
According to Numbers USA, chain migration “refers to the endless and often-snowballing chains of foreign nationals who are allowed to immigrate because the law allows citizens and lawful permanent residents to bring in their extended, non-nuclear family members.” In a nutshell, each year the United States of America admits over one million to our country and the families of legal immigrants are a large portion of this number, which is approximately four times the number admitted in 1990. An interesting chart is provided showing the impact a single immigrant has on the nation's population.
Birthright citizenship
The Pew Hispanic Center estimated in 2010 that 8% of births in our country, or approximately 350,000, were born to at least one illegal alien parent. Pew also estimates the total illegal alien population to be 3.7% of our nation's total, or approximately 11.5 million (using today's US census estimate).
If Rasmussen is to be believed, the vast majority (65%) of Americans oppose automatic citizenship for children born here to illegal alien parents. The sentiment seems to be gaining ground in the House as well, with 87 sponsors to House Resolution 140, including Congressman Lou Barletta, which seeks to amend our current immigration laws and strip citizenship from “anchor babies.”
Important issues
Much like amnesty, these practices actually serve as incentives for aliens, or magnets. While it may be true that many aliens are voluntarily returning to their home country due to the sluggish economy, it's also true that accepting this temporary reversal as a solution to the alien invasion is folly, for the economy will one day be strong again and they will return. They come not just for jobs, but for the benefits that American citizens enjoy.
Romney has consistently stated his belief that mass deportation will not be likely if the magnets which draw aliens here are simply turned off. But, he stops short of promising to force the issue or deport any aliens who do remain. Again, Numbers USA provides the following quotes from a 2006 interview given by Romney, "[T]he 11 million immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally "are not going to be rounded up and box-carred out." Law-abiding people who pay taxes, learn English, and don't rely on government benefits should be allowed to "get in line" to apply for citizenship.... We need to begin a process of registering those people, some being returned, and some beginning the process of applying for citizenship and establishing legal status.... We're not going to go through a process of tracking them all down and moving them out.... We should have those individuals who are here illegally begin a process either of returning to their homes -- particularly those that are unable to be here without government support or those who are involved in crime --or beginning a process of registering for a citizenship, applying for citizenship and then carrying out the process necessary to get there."
Pretty good is not good enough
Sorry, Mitt, but that simply is not good enough. We need every last alien in this country to be living in fear of exactly what you say will NOT happen, being rounded up and deported. It should matter not whether they are law abiding, tax paying, self-sufficient and English speaking. Drawing this kind of line in the sand defeats the purpose, essentially proclaiming it to be acceptable for certain types of people to be aliens but not others. Above all else, there should be no consideration of citizenship for any alien until they return to their homeland and begin the process the right way. No remaining here while trying to do what they should have done in the first place.
So, Romney may be far and away the best man left in the race on the issue of illegal immigration but that does not mean we must simply accept his views as the end all. The continued fight against illegal aliens in our midst must be all encompassing, giving no quarter on any issue.
We cannot accept any form of amnesty; we cannot accept any type of DREAM Act; we can no longer accept the offering of in-state tuition to alien students; we can no longer accept unscrupulous employers handing over much needed jobs to illegal aliens; we cannot accept unsecured borders any longer; we cannot accept more than one national language, English; we cannot continue to allow the Mobile Mexican Consulate to travel our country passing out ID cards to Mexican Nationals; we can no longer accept the continuance of sanctuary cities and must demand all federal funding be withheld from them; we can no longer accept the continuance of ITN numbers being issued to aliens in place of a social security card nor the issuing of tax credits for aliens; we can no longer tolerate the issuing of driver's licenses to aliens by ANY state; we can no longer accept the proliferation of English as Second Language curriculum in our public schools; we cannot accept the boldness of aliens who publicly proclaim their status and “right” to be here; we cannot accept the attempts at revisionist history (read lies) promoted by some, intended to persuade the uneducated that the United States of America is occupying what should be Mexican land; we cannot accept birthright citizenship and we cannot continue to tolerate the insane pace of chain migration into this country.
More importantly, we must insist that Romney not accept these things either.

Default Who knows.

Who knows what Mitt will do after he is elected.

Personally I would favor chain gangs cleaning up the desert on their way back south. But - reality sets in.

ICE has chased some illegal alien criminals for 5 years before finding them. There are Mexicans and OTM's. They come from many countries. About 60% from Mexico. Some sneaked across the border and some came legally with visas but overstayed.

It is highly probable that a sudden, massive round up of illegal alien job holders, would severely dislocate and destabilize some segments of the economy.

Our Government has been chronically short of money, resources and personnel for years. Even back in the INS days.

I'm not so sure that everyone understands Mitt's policy on the immigrants here illegally. They have to go to the BACK of the line. I think there is, or was, a provision to go home and touch back then restart the process properly. There are many Be-back's that, if tossed out, will simply turn around and come back over and over and over. Many have counterfeit documents and multiples of same. Some won't tell what nationality they are.

There are thousands here who can't return home because their Countries won't take them back.

The Churches, socialists, Commies, leftist progressives will be in an uproar, clandestinely aiding, hiding the illegals as they did with Elvira Arellano and her son Saul who hid out in a Chicago church for a year.

The cost of repatriating many illegals will be huge flying them half way around the world. And it can be a revolving door.

Mitt can only do what he can do if Congress helps him. He can't do it alone.

Whatever he says now before the election may possibly contain some offering to certain ethnic groups in expectation of receiving votes. Conservatives and Ultraconservatives won't have much chance of getting elected with so many Democrats outnumbering the Republicans.

Half a Mitt would still be better than 4 more years of the current disaster.

In reality illegal immigration ranks pretty far down on the ladder of concerns for many Americans. Jobs, the economy, debt, foreign policy, the price of gasoline at the pump, the Canadian Keystone pipeline and much more are super-positioned.
