Default Bill Clinton coming to O.C. for Sanchez rally

SANTA ANA – Former President Bill Clinton plans to visit Santa Ana this month to rally re-election votes for Democratic Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.

Clinton is scheduled to headline a campaign event at 3 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Old Orange County Courthouse, according to the Sanchez campaign. The event will be free and open to the public.

Sanchez, D-Santa Ana, faces a spirited challenge for her congressional seat by Republican Assemblyman Van Tran. National campaign-watchers give Sanchez an edge in the race, although Republican polls suggest she leads Tran by only a few percentage points.

"I am honored to have President Bill Clinton's support," Sanchez said in a prepared statement. "There is no one who understands the struggles our working families are facing and how we can continue to recover our economy better than President Clinton."

The race between Sanchez and Tran in central Orange County's 47th District has drawn national interest from both parties.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has coordinated $13,000 in spending on behalf of Sanchez, more than it has in any other election in more than 10 years, federal election records show. Congressional Republicans have named Tran a "Young Gun" candidate, a designation that raises his profile with party donors; they also spotlighted the race on their website this week under the headline, "Loretta Sanchez' Vulnerability."

Sanchez backed up Clinton when he campaigned in Santa Ana in 2008 on behalf of his wife, then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. She introduced him at a rally at Santa Ana College that drew around 400 people.

Clinton won't be the first big name from the Beltway to visit Orange County ahead of the Nov. 2 elections. Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to join Sen. Barbara Boxer for a Laguna Beach fundraiser this afternoon.

This would be a good place to pick at that racist attitude that Sanchez has been exhibiting lately
