Default DREAM scheme: Last-minute vote buying

DREAM scheme: Last-minute vote buying
When the Senate debated the DREAM Act on Saturday, the gallery reportedly was filled by a group of student activists who came to support the bill. After it failed, the activists held a news conference outside the Capitol building to denounce the vote. Funny thing about that -- every one of the activists was an illegal alien, and yet all were allowed not only to enter the Capitol, but to hold a news conference there. None was arrested. Such is our government's nonchalant attitude toward illegal immigration. A bunch of admitted illegals came to Washington to pressure the citizens' elected representatives to pass a bill that would grant them benefits, and the government yawned.
American citizens have the right to petition their government. Do illegal aliens have the equivalent right to petition our government? Washington's ruling class seems to think so.
The DREAM Act would have allowed an estimated 11 million illegal college students (yes, illegal, but already done with two years in an American institution of higher education) to obtain green cards and become legal residents. In five years, they could apply for citizenship.
Amazingly, the Democrats' attempt to buy the votes of 11 million illegal aliens (and their children, in perpetuity) failed when five Senate Democrats voted with Republicans to stop it. Thank goodness for that brief burst of sanity.
