Three separate assaults on border patrol agents
Posted: Mar 23, 2010 8:14 AM PDT Tuesday, March 23, 2010 11:14 AM EST Updated: Mar 23, 2010 2:58 PM PDT TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Officers are reporting three separate assaults while trying to apprehend suspected illegal immigrants. United States Customs and Border Protection says agents assigned to the Sonoita and Nogales Station were physically attacked over the weekend. Officers say agents from the Sonoita Station were physically attacked in two incidents. Also, an agent from the Nogales Station had to wrestle with a suspect who had fled from the Interstate 19 checkpoint. Agents say they are experiencing an increase in violence and assaults as they work to strengthen border protection. CPB leaders say agents have been assaulted 134 times during the first five months of the fiscal year which started October 1, 2009. They report 93 assaults during the same period last year. "Agents must constantly remain vigilant to threats from a variety of sources," said Chief Patrol Agent Victor M. Manjarrez, Jr. "Their perseverance is a fundamental component of our success in improving operational control of our Nation's borders," said Manjarrez. http://www.kold.com/Global/story.asp?S=12188554 |
