Immigration fight rages Inland
Immigration fight rages Inland
Before an overflow crowd, Hemet City Council members voted 4-0 Tuesday to back Arizona's anti-illegal immigration law. In Lake Elsinore, the council also voiced support for Arizona's law, and passed an ordinance requiring businesses to verify the residency status of people they hire. And in Temecula, residents used the general-comment period to urge the council to consider an ordinance similar to Lake Elsinore's. The mayor directed the city manager to look into it. The local actions come as the debate about illegal immigration intensifies in California and nationally. The Arizona law would require police investigating another incident or crime to ask people about their immigration status if there's a "reasonable suspicion" they're in the country illegally. It also would make being in Arizona illegally a misdemeanor, and would prohibit seeking day-labor work along the state's streets. On Monday, voters in Fremont, Neb., approved a ban on hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants. Several California cities have denounced the Arizona law, while two others -- Yorba Linda and Orange -- have voted in support. The laws in Arizona and Nebraska are likely to face court challenges. http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/s...3.24bc68b.html City Council video http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/7835839 |
