FRAMINGHAM —

The illegal immigrant half-uncle of President Barack Obama, arrested last week for allegedly driving drunk, has had a Massachusetts driver's license for nearly 20 years, a registry spokesman said yesterday.

Onyango Obama, 67, has had a license since at least 1992, the farthest back the Registry of Motor Vehicles has electronically stored records, agency spokesman Michael Verseckes said.

The fact that he had a driver's license indicates Obama had a U.S. Social Security number.

"To obtain a license in Massachusetts, you need a valid Social Security number and you need proof of residency," Verseckes said.

Obama was arrested last Wednesday on a charge of drunken driving after his sport utility vehicle nearly hit a police cruiser on Waverly Street, police said.

Police said Obama had a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer warrant. He had been ordered deported back to his native Kenya, police said.

Obama has worked at Conti Liquors, 409 Concord St., since 2006, store owner Parimal Patel said.

"I have nothing but good things to say about him," said Patel. "He's probably the best employee I've had."

Obama usually worked about 30 hours a week, mostly nights, Patel said. He never talked about relatives and never mentioned the president.

"If I knew I would have asked him for tickets to the White House," Patel said.

Patel said he knew Obama was from Kenya, but said he had no idea he was here illegally. He said Obama provided a Social Security number and a driver's license.

"He's been paying taxes. I know he got a refund," Patel said.

Obama has had some minor trouble while working at Conti Liquors, Framingham Police said. Last year, police conducted a sting by sending an underage man into the store to buy liquor. Obama sold the 19-year-old man alcohol without asking for an ID, police said. The store lost its license for three days.

In 2006, Obama also sold alcohol to two underage men using fake IDs, police said.

ICE on Monday said it would not comment on any specific cases, and did not return an email or phone call seeking information yesterday. The White House press office also declined comment.

Mike Rogers, a spokesman for Obama's immigration lawyer, Margaret Wong, said Obama remains in custody at the Plymouth County House of Correction on the immigration warrant.

Rogers said he does not know how long Obama has been in the United States, living in Massachusetts or the last time he has spoken to his nephew, the president, if ever.
