Powell's immigration comments carry little weight

An immigration reform activist thinks it's unfortunate that former Secretary of State Colin Powell recently revealed he has no problem using illegal aliens to make repairs on his home.

During a recent interview on NBC's Meet the Press, Powell said a path to citizenship should be offered to illegal immigrants because they "are doing things we need done in this country." Though he did not specify whether he hired illegals directly, the retired general also cited first-hand knowledge about illegal aliens making repairs in his own house.

"Colin Powell has always been an apologist for illegal immigration. He's been a supporter of amnesty throughout his public life, but if he is admitting that he knowingly violated the law in hiring illegal aliens, that's something that really is unacceptable from somebody who was a high-ranking member of the Bush administration," contends Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

"He was secretary of state of the United States; he was the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. There's a higher expectation that he's going to abide by the laws of this land, whether he agrees with them or not. He ought to be held to a high standard," Mehlman adds.

But despite Powell's enormous popularity, the FAIR spokesman does not think the former secretary of state's opinion will sway many people to support amnesty for illegal immigrants.
