ID senator targets businesses that hire illegals
BOISE, Idaho (AP) - A northern Idaho Republican is again trying to crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants.
Hayden Lake Republican Sen. Mike Jorgenson must first get his legislation through the Senate State Affairs Committee, which is also due to consider at least one other immigration-related bill.
The committee voted to consider Jorgenson's measure at a full hearing, but its members grilled him Friday on his plan to punish employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens with fines and suspensions.
Senate Majority Leader Bart Davis raised concerns the bill could burn up law enforcement agencies' resources.
Jorgenson countered that cracking down on illegal immigration will save taxpayers millions in the long run.
He wants employers to use a federal verification system and would deny state funds to cities that reject the legislation.
He's been trying for years unsuccessfully to pass similar legislation.
