DREAM Act Immigration Legislation receives support from US President
Tuesday, 26 July 2011
US President Barack Obama has promised to double his efforts to get the immigration legislation DREAM Act passed.
According to President Obama, the immigrant students who have grown up in the United States are welcomed to attain full US citizenship if they have clean criminal record.
Under the act, some children of illegal immigrants might be permitted to apply for temporary legal status as a six-year path to permanent residency in the US if they graduate from high school, and attend the college or serve in the US military.
"We are pursuing it right now. We were pursuing it last year," and "We should be welcoming [the undocumented students] and so I've consistently said that I am a strong supporter of the DREAM Act," so said the President.
Although the measure was sidelined by a Senate filibuster in September, Obama shared his view that it's necessary to put pressure for members of Congress to do the right thing on this issue.
Obama is trying his best to keep his promise to the National Conference of La Raza in July 2008, when he ran for president, that he would make the US immigration reform a priority during the first year of his presidency.
