There's more than one play in this.

Villaraigosa may have Mexico in his family background, but he can never be "Mexican".

He knows it, and the Mexican politicians who try to take advantage of the rhetoric know it as well - they better than he.

And what I interpret Villaraigosa to stand for is not wholly compatible with Mexican culture - Chicanistas pick and chose what parts of Mexican culture to present along with leftist ideas from American and sell the selectively bastardized (both ways) interpretation as "our beautiful Mexican culture".

So, it's the old game. Chicanistas want indoctrinated brown bodies for a racist bid for power at the ballot box, while Mexican politicians want a people who remain 100% Mexican to carry out their bid to appropriate the American dollar and usurp American territory.

Chicanismo can't live with what is truly Mexican, while Mexicanidad can't live with agringado pochos.

But, they'll cynically use each other while watching for the stab between the shoulder blades - Loyalty lasts only as long as it's convenient.
