Immigration Agency Monitors, Postpones Deportation for Pasadena 911 Caller
The 26-year-old's deportation date is being postponed pending an investigation to a fatal shooting by a Pasadena police officer
The 911 caller who was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter after police said his false report led to the shooting death of a 19-year-old has been released from Pasadena City Jail and is being electronically monitored by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to agency officials.
Oscar Carrillo-Gonzalez’s deportation will be postponed, at the request of Pasadena police, until the cop shooting investigation is complete, said Virginia Kice, ICE spokeswoman.
Carrillo-Gonzalez, 26, was arrested March 29 after he reported being robbed by two armed men, one of whom was fatally shot by police in a subsequent pursuit. Police never found a weapon, and there were no witnesses or video recording of the incident.
That arrest tipped off ICE to Carrillo, who was reportedly living in the U.S. illegally after being formally deported to Mexico in 2006, Kice said.
The District Attorney’s Office declined Monday to file involuntary manslaughter charges against Carrillo-Gonzalez, but said they are continuing to investigate his purported role in the March 24 shooting death of Kendrec McDade at the hands of Pasadena police. The shooting happened during a pursuit involving two police officers - one of which drove while the other chased after McDade.
The officer in the car, identified as Jeffery Newlen, has been with the department for about five years and prior to this shooting, has not fired his weapon in the line of duty, officials said.
The other officer, Matthew Griffin, has been with the department for almost six years and in 2007 was involved in the shooting of a rottweiller.
Both officers are on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
