This is a especially weird since the US has gone out of its way to distinguish (falsely) latinos as a distinct race, never mind the cutural anthropology details. If they want to go back to making Mexicans white, that would be preferable, but they shouldn't be able to pick and choose according to the circumstances.
There is another tendency to pose sexual offenders as being primarily white male as a kind racist dig at whites. Maybe this is a part of this. Sort of like the notion of "home grown terrorists" including middle easterners who are born here, but communicate and travel abroad.
