Default Probe finds cheating by educators in Atlanta school district

Probe finds cheating by educators in Atlanta school district
Special state investigators have uncovered a decade of organized, systemic cheating in the Atlantic school district by scores of educators, including 38 principals, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Gov. Nathan Deal, who released a two-page summary of the report, says "there will be consequences" for educators who cheated on state-mandated tests in Atlanta public schools.
He says the report will be sent to three district attorneys as well as city and state education officials.
The probe, officials say, found a culture that rewarded cheaters, punished whistle-blowers and covered up improprieties, the newspaper says. It accuses district leaders of hampering the investigators' work.
The investigation was prompted by extensive coverage by The Journal-Constitution on improbable gains in the state-mandated test scores, including suspicious score changes at a dozen schools.
The report comes less than a week after the departure of longtime Atlanta superintendent Beverly Hall.
The newspaper quotes officials as saying investigators concluded that Hall knew or should have known about the cheating.
Hall has repeatedly denied any involvement in cheating, the paper says, although she recently acknowledged wrongdoing by other district employees.
