You forget that Germany was in the midst of developing an atomic weapon until the US stopped them. They were also still building rockets to launch at civilian targets in britian, some with mindless chance oriented targeting mechanisms. Japan, while not so engaged in that process had shown tremendous resolve to dig in, and continue the fight. In addition, Japan was developing other threatening tools of war to launch at us in underhanded attacks. Have you seen the submarines they built that were aircraft carriers? They were planning to sail them to the panama canal for another sneak attack while disguising the planes as other than japanese.
While the use of the A-bomb was somewhat questionable, the one's doing the questioning are usually the ones who weren't going to be involved in the invasion of the japanese homeland
