Default The Passionate Debate Continues ...

Letters to the San Jose Mercury News -

Downtown College Prep has been helping undocumented students realize the dream of college success for 10 years. They have graduated from Santa Clara University, San Jose State and UC Santa Cruz with degrees in mechanical engineering, environmental science and various humanities majors.

Recently, at a local charity event, I noticed one of DCP's undocumented college graduates serving beverages to guests. He'll stay at this job until the company catches up with his false Social Security number. Then he'll move to another high-turnover service industry position. Sadly, if our undocumented college graduates want to work in the careers for which they've trained, they must consider multinational corporations working in Canada or Mexico.

DCP and forward-thinking universities are playing their part. It's time for political and corporate leadership to correct this flawed design.

Jennifer Andaluz
Co-founder and Executive Director, Downtown College Prep

Your support (Editorial, Sept. 16) of the Dream Act makes me sick. Do you think it is right that a person born in the United States legally and whose family has paid taxes for years to fund our public universities should be denied a spot at a public university by an illegal immigrant?

That is sad.
