The problem is the "two party system". As long as the public continues to support the notion that government just naturally consists of the "two parties", the Democrats and the Republicans, and that there are no other political interests, we are going to have the same problems.
The backbone of the "two party system" is the primary election system where we hold public elections for the nominees
within the two parties. The public is drawn up in these elections and frequently confuses them with the election for the actual office. Our last election here in California was a primary election for the races for the party candidates for governer. The actual election is this November.
The only thing we have to do to get rid of the publicly financed and managed primary elections is to confront the odious practice of asking your political party when you register to vote. Most people who are voting are already registered and don't really think too hard about the fact that they are on file with the government as to their party affiliation.
Nobody has any business asking you what your political party is when you register to vote. And nobody has any business keeping track of your political party for purposes of elections. We need to make it a criminal act to ask what your political party is for purposes of voting and voter registration. There are many such criminal acts possible around voting and voter registration.
This will destroy the "two party system". No more Red States. No more Blue States. A whole new order will emerge while the "two parties" scramble to reorient themselves to who their members are and the members themselves are forced to actually think about what it means to be either a Democrat or a Republican.
Has anyone noticed all the media attention given to the marriage of Chelsea Clinton? Since when does the marriage of a daughter of a former president qualify as a media event? It is the cultural advancement of the "two party" order.
