I think there are a lot of forces at work here,

Some want to ripple a large portion of the economy, but not the portion that they rely on. Another factor is that the left wants to deprive the what they percieve as the "rich" of the monetary tool so as to limit their ability to conduct thier campaigns and hold power. The rich always resort to hunkering down and keeping their wealth in times where profits are slim and investments are risky. Unfortunately, the majority of us are stuck in the crossfire, and are being deprived of our input. To have input, you either must possess wealth or power. The middle class power base was divided by politics, and their wealth was curbed by economics because they don't earn or save like the rich
