SC legislators debating illegal immigration
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina legislators could give final approval to an illegal immigration bill during their wrap-up session.
Senators resumed debate Tuesday on proposed changes to existing state law that penalizes businesses for hiring illegal workers. Officials want to bring that 2008 law in line with last month's U.S. Supreme Court ruling on an Arizona law.
The changes would require businesses of all sizes to use the federal online E-verify program to check employees' legal status. They would also remove fines against violators and instead threaten to take away their operating licenses.
Republican senators are trying to add the changes to a bill requiring officers to try to check suspects' immigration status after a stop for another issue.
