A Canadian friend, who has been here since the 50's and was a successful SoCal businessman before he retired, said that it is getting tough in Arizona. I don't remember all the details, but it seems he was stopped in Arizona and asked about nationality. He showed them his Permanent Residence card.
His wife (from one of the old families) grew up in one of the local barrios (she didn't make the trip with him). However, he himself speaks English like a Californian and looks somewhat French / English (English last name), might have some Indian in his further ancestry.
Based on this, I believe they are applying their investigation to everyone, not just the "Mexican looking" types.
That's the way it should be.
