"Hispanic", like "Latino" and even "Mexican" in common usage, is a word so broad as be meaningless.
What happened 500 years ago may be relevant to understand the present, as the present is merely the unfolding of the past. However, no one today sailed with Columbus, Held Cuauhtemoc's feet to the fire, or was part of an Indian empire which sacrificed and ate the neighbors.
No matter who says what. What matters is what is going on today, and correctly identifying the participants. The words above by themselves provide no identity.
