LA Votes To Pay Illegals To Leave...in 1941

In 1941 LA County voted to pay illegal aliens to go back to Mexico so as to reduce welfare rolls. See this LA Times story.

To reduce the welfare rolls, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approves paying $100 [$1,441.19 USD 2009] to illegal immigrants to move back to Mexico. Families were to receive $10 a month for 10 months either through the Mexican government or the U.S. consul, The Times said.
That was 1941.

They pay a lot more than $1500.00 to come here now, as well as running the risk of rape; being kidnapped and held for ransom by rival smuggling gangs - and maybe getting caught in cross fire as it happens; accosted by drug gangs in Northern Mexico and presented the choice of being drug mules or dying on the spot; being abandoned to die in the desert; and much, much more.

LA county is a much different place now than then.

Unemployment comes to a maximum of about $1840 a month under one name; employment under another name contributes more; welfare for the children; Medi Cal for everyone; endless programs for distributing freebies to the "underprivileged" both government and private. And they often don't even have to ask for it, it gets shoveled over to them.

Do you honestly believe anyone would really want to return to Latin America for a measly $1500.00?

If illegal immigration is ever going to be fixed, there has to be an attitudinal tune up in Congress, a president elected who has the will to uphold and enforce the law as he's sworn to do, punishment of employers for hiring illegals, punishment of those who abet illegals including civil servants and "advocate" organizations of all types; a shake up of the immigration court system, a mandate for ICE to do it's job, and investigative involvement with the IRS and SSA.

As well as getting rid of taxpayer funded, racially divisive "educational" programs such as "ethnic studies" and "educator" pushed ethnic nationalism from kindergarten up.

Otherwise, it's all empty talk.

Another government program probably rife with abuse. We would pay, then they would sneak back a few days later. I gues back then the cost of deportation was presumably a little more than the amount offered. Now it would be alot more, and Mexico would just get into the act of sending more of their criminals here just so they could collect the money and the mexican government could glean if from them as they re-entered mexico

I enlarged the original article and it referred to repatriations since 1930-31. This 1941 program was merely a continuation of programs going back a decade.

The most amazing thing is the change of attitude since 1941, when our own governments, as far down as the county level, actually believed America belonged to Americans. Not now.

In the 1960's I clerked for a lawyer who went to night law school while working as a welfare fraud investigator for LA County and the stories she told were mind blowing. The policy of LA County in the 60's was to encourage more welfare and the county was very much aware of bus loads of Mexican women who arrived from Tijuana every day to give birth at LA County hospitals to anchor babies, although that term was not used. More welfare cases meant more county welfare workers to administer the programs. This was their attitude even then, although it was not really publicized or made known to the general public. As a teenager, I gave it little thought. I did notice that people who raised the issue were denounced as "racists" blah, blah, blah.

What changed between 1941 and 1960s'?

One thing that changed was that in the 1960's, LA County literally had more money than it knew what to do with and one way to spend it was to increase the welfare bureaucracy by having more people on welfare, even if it was necessary to import welfare cases from Mexico. It's weird to read a 1941 news clip and realize that as recently as 20 years before the 1960's, money actually meant something and that tax revenues came from real people. Where did all this money come from? Were we the victims of our own prosperity which seemed limitless? Maybe.

Other changes were the "civil rights" and "equality" movements, that transformed America's tax paying, working majority from freedom to indentured servitude and relegated it to second class citizenship. The working tax paying American majority lost its right to say "NO" to anyone, whether it be illegal aliens, pornographers, forced integration, or the nationalization of almost all private property through various "civil rights" and "anti-discrimination" laws that stripped people of their rights of freedom of choice and freedom of association.

Exactly. And not only that, if it was such a good idea, it would have solved the problem the first time. This is like the Republican amnesty under Reagan. The Republicans proved that amnesty does not work.

This is known as "bringing money into the community". The idea is totally devoid of the reality that welfare funding derives from the tax base. It is either an ignorant policy which is divorced from reality or it is a cynically calculated means to an end, probably a little of both.
