Powell's immigration comments carry little weight

Powell's immigration comments carry little weight

An immigration reform activist thinks it's unfortunate that former Secretary of State Colin Powell recently revealed he has no problem using illegal aliens to make repairs on his home.

During a recent interview on NBC's Meet the Press, Powell said a path to citizenship should be offered to illegal immigrants because they "are doing things we need done in this country." Though he did not specify whether he hired illegals directly, the retired general also cited first-hand knowledge about illegal aliens making repairs in his own house.

"Colin Powell has always been an apologist for illegal immigration. He's been a supporter of amnesty throughout his public life, but if he is admitting that he knowingly violated the law in hiring illegal aliens, that's something that really is unacceptable from somebody who was a high-ranking member of the Bush administration," contends Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

"He was secretary of state of the United States; he was the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. There's a higher expectation that he's going to abide by the laws of this land, whether he agrees with them or not. He ought to be held to a high standard," Mehlman adds.

But despite Powell's enormous popularity, the FAIR spokesman does not think the former secretary of state's opinion will sway many people to support amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Powell is making himself look like a fool. I have always had a lot of respect for him but it is not blind respect.

Isn't hiring illegal aliens against the law? Why isn't Powell being charged with anything?

IS this the same Colin Powell who said Iraq was a threat to our national security?

IN the 10 years that we bombed Iraq, it could not shoot down a single one of our planes. Iraq had no strategic air power and its tactical air power consisted of obsolete jet fighters. It's armor was obsolete.

In the 1980's, Iraq fought Iran and could not achieve victory. That war ended in stalemate.

It was obvious to anyone with any sense of history and even the most rudimentary knowledge of geo-politics that Iraq was never a threat to us.

Powell is a traitor who knowingly lied to obtain support for an unnecessary war.

Powell is a loyal soldier who learned first hand the lessons of Vietnam and was an architect of the first gulf war, which kicked the living shit out of Saddam's army and achieved the goal throwing Saddam out of Kuwait.

George Sr. was wiser than to invade Iraq, as was reflected by Powell's comment to George Jr that if he broke it (Iraq), King George would own it.

Powell was duped by George Jr's political machine as to the true nature of Iraq's threat to the US. Powell's credibility was shamelessly used as if he were a dispensable, kick to the curb cheap whore.

Powell's credentials as a faithful warrior is an apple to the orange issue of whether or not he has hired illegal aliens in violation of the law which would, if immigration laws were actually enforced, be determined in a court of law in front of a jury of his peers.

Powell was "duped" by Geo. Bush? I stand by my argument. There is no way Iraq was a threat to the USA. If Powell was dumb enough to be "duped" by Bush, he was too dumb to be Secretary of State or anything else. As for being used as a cheap whore...well, I never said he was cheap.

George had the CIA lay it on thick, Powell took that one up the wazoo. Left a bad taste in his mouth to be used up like that.

Illegal aliens around the Powell residence is a different matter, something to be determined in a court of law.

I am not saying Powell is not/has not been a good citizen. I am just unhappy with anyone who will not reject illegal workers. Yes, he really was sold a bill of goods about the WMDs and everyone should realize that. He was at the heart of it and we do not know just what he was told by his superiors. I always felt pretty sorry about what the GWB adm. did to him.
