Obama criticized for dissing iPad, other tech gadgets as ‘distractions’

U.S. President Barack Obama got some flack after his speech at Hampton University in Virginia yesterday after dissing Apple’s iPad and other tech gadgets that he said could lead Americans away from the truth, Newser.com reports.

In his speech, Mr. Obama told students:

“You’re coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t always rank all that high on the truth meter. With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations — none of which I know how to work — information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation.”

The New York Post also reports that Mr. Obama said these tech gadgets are: “putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy.”

A writer for CNET had the following reaction:

“Time will tell if the iPad becomes just another distraction. But until then, Obama might even be well advised to tout the iPad’s potential at schools rather than slamming it as just another attention-deficit device.”

A writer for the Tech Republic said Mr. Obama’s comments have some legitimacy, but:

“It’s still odd coming from Obama, who is the first U.S. president to be glued to a smartphone, to appoint a federal CIO, and to push the government toward cloud computing. The naming of several specific products was also odd, and probably not very wise.”
How stupid can you get? None of these devices are especially made for collecting information and even if they were, they still couldn't compete with the desktop computer. And the desktop computer is everywhere people need information for at least ten years now.

Since when did anyone purchase an XBox to look up information? Who told this fool he would make a good president? He would hardly make a good office clerk.
