Four steps to solve the immigration problem

Four steps to solve the immigration problem

Regarding the recent Sun Sentinel immigration column by Mary Sanchez:
She says we should turn our heads on the 11 million illegal immigrants in this country and let them stay. What kind of message does this thinking send? What does she think we should do with the next 11 million illegal immigrants and the next 11 million after that?
Her liberal naivete to the costs, burden, injustices and crime that come with illegal immigration is unbelievable. This is money that could be better directed to the benefit of impoverished legal citizens.
Most immigrants who have gone through the arduous efforts and costs to be here legally are outraged by the blind eye the federal government is taking on this issue.
States are being forced to pass their own immigration legislation because the Obama administration, in an effort to pander to the Latino vote, refuses to enforce federal immigration regulations that are already on the books.
If you take the politics out of it, the illegal immigration situation is pretty simple; particularly if you don't gloss over the part about it being illegal.
Here's a four-step program that the federal government should implement without 2,500 pages of political garbage and earmarks. If the federal government doesn't have the spine to do it, then the states should continue to implement it individually until the current federal politicians are replaced.
Dramatically slow the influx of illegal immigrants by securing the borders with physical impediments (fences, etc.) and troops.
Impose strong penalties, including significant fines and jail time, on businesses that employ illegal workers. Let there be a six-month moratorium whereby employers can get rid of the illegal workers.
As jobs become available, by displacing illegal workers, offer the jobs to the able-bodied U.S. citizens collecting welfare or unemployment subsidies. Those who are provided job opportunities would be taken off of the public dole whether they accept the work or not. Also, some jobs could be filled by minimum-risk, work-release prisoners.
Begin the process of rounding up and deporting illegal immigrants. Let them come through the immigration process legally, the same as our ancestors did. Change the law so that any of their children would be deported with their parents, regardless of where they were born.

Here's a summary of this plan:

1. Seal the borders.

Of course. We need to seal the borders. But that's not just our physical borders, but all those points where people become illegal immigrants. Remember that many people who are illegal immigrants came in the country legally.

2. Start cracking down on those who hire illegal immigrants.

That's great, but we have to remember that a good part of those who hire illegals are themselves immigrants. Why should cracking down not include removing the citizenship of naturalized citizens who hire illegals. Which brings us to another problem with part three of the plan.

3. Start replacing the illegal serfs with citizen welfare cases and prisoners.

But what about non-citizen welfare cases? What about anchor babies? What about legal immigrants who also take jobs? Is it wise to impose a "work like a serf or starve in the streets" strategy on citizens? And by the way, illegal immigrants are typically hired by other legal immigrants and all too often, they won't hire anyone else or can't because they don't speak the language either. The economy is increasingly engineered to create jobs for illegal immigrants and immigrants only. If we hope to apply a cattle prod to welfare cases and priosoner citizens, it's not going to solve any problem anywhere, least of all the illegal immigration problem.

4. Start rounding up illegal immigrants.

This is all we really need to do. Increase the criminality of being here illegally. Start increasing the penalties for enabling illegal immigrants for naturalized citizens. Start sorting out the anchor babies and explaining to them they are not citizens and never have been.
