I have returned

I know I have been absent from this forum for a long time...a little too long.

In December of 2011 I suffered a small stroke. I was in the hospital for nearly a month and I spent a whole month in a nursing home.

So far I have regained 95% of my strength on my left side.

For more than a year I have been reclusive. I would rarely called my sisters and trips outside the apartment were limited to doctors appointments and therapy. The past few month have been hard on me. I have been depressed and I felt like nothing could motivate me to get out of the apartment.

Everything changed last night...

It was just after 6pm and I had finished dinner and I had the sliding door open. No sooner than I got comfortable, I started to hear the familiar honking of an old bike horn. This meant that the cockroach car was making its rounds in the apartments. For the past several years this woman has been a pain in the rear. She used to come about 5pm but I had complained to the manager and she was escorted off the property and she was told to never to return. Well, that was the shortest book ever written; she just started to come after the front office was closed.

Unfortunately for her, last night she made the mistake by stopping right in front of my apartment.

By the time I I gout out to her car she was slopping mayo onto ears of corn. I politely asked her if she had the proper permits and licenses to sell food out of her car. She said she did have everything in order and she retrieved a folder out of the front seat and opened it up. The first thing I saw was a sellers permit and I pointed out that the sellers permit was issued to be used at an address in Lake Elsinore. With that said, she pulled out an envelope and claimed it contained a business license for the city I live in. She did not even attempt to to remove the license out of the envelope to show me. Then I asked her for her county food handlers permit and a county health department inspection certificate. No sooner than I mentioned 'health department certificate', she slaps the folder shut and slams the hatch back closed and took off. She knew that she could not fool me. I took one last photo of her license plate and early Monday morning I called the health department and filed the complaint.

As for the guy who bout the corn, he asked me why I would stop someone from making money selling food out of their car. I had to explain to him that we have health and safety laws for a reason. I told him that every year hundreds of people get sick and die because food was not properly prepared and stored. I pointed out unless someone has a food handlers permit, that person has not been tested for deadly diseases and has no training how to keep food from being a health hazard. I also pointed out that she had nothing to wash her hands with and there was a half bag of disposable diapers between the ice chest and the bags of tomallies. At that moment he looked at the ears of corn with a look of suspicion.

Needles to say, this encounter raised my spirits and I feel useful again.
