AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry says America should extend work visas to allow illegal immigrants to move freely between the U.S. and their home countries—but opposes a path to citizenship.

The Republican presidential candidate told CNN’s John King on Thursday that expecting authorities to arrest and deport millions of illegal immigrants isn’t realistic. He added, however, that other Republicans, including former President George W. Bush, went too far by proposing a path to citizenship.

He didn’t elaborate on what a work visa program might look like and said it can only happen if the federal government first secures America’s southern border.

Perry also repeated his opposition to a fence running the length of that border, saying it wouldn’t work and would take 10 to 15 years to build.

Well, millions of people do need jobs. :)

"... expecting authorities to arrest and deport millions of illegal immigrants isn’t realistic."

Why not? Imagine they were pot smokers. If we were to spend all the money, time and personnel that we do prosecuting pot smokers on throwing out illegal immigrants, we could do it over night.

Both Rimo's and Twollers responses are very good and valid!!!! Perry is a joke.

Thoughts

I tried to give Rick Perry a fair shake and contemplate his various positions on immigration. I wanted to be fair and objective.

I like his military record. I also like his refusal to flip flop on issues that come back to bite him. But that's about all that there is to like. His record as Governor has produced statistics that are abysmal. Education, poverty place him close to last place in the USA. Job creation was and is largely illegal aliens.

Perry was a Democrat and he remains a Democrat philosophically even though he has joined the Republican party.

I understand his position on the fence. A double fence with trenches and concertina barbed, or razor, wire isn't practical nor desirable in SOME remote and mountainous areas.

Work visas for foreigners are already available. In fact agricultural visas are available in unlimited numbers. But the rules are - advertise for Americans and if none are found to fill the jobs, then process the immigrants. Get proper documentation, E-verify,pay taxes. First everyone will lie and cheat. And second the farmers, businesses don't like it.

So to understand Perry, he has a dual philosophy, hard on criminals and soft on Mexican laborers and other border jumpers. He wants troops on the border, the border secured, but also wants triage, letting the workers who haven't committed a crime to filter through. He just wants open borders. He wants the Dream Act.

He, mistakenly, plays to the desires of Texans who vote for him but fails miserably when exposed to the entire Continental United States.

But he's now a non-issue. His poll numbers are plummeting like a rock and he has no chance of being elected. It's over for him. He's toast.

I think that after the November 8 th National elections we will begin to see the candidates drop out little by little as their money dries up and they realize that they must face reality and throw in the towel.

The most obvious failing of Perry's plan is that it isn't really very different that our last president's (and current president's) amnesty proposal. They're both just dressed-up amnesties, much like the DREAM Act.

Under the schemes either Texas governor has advocated for, illegal aliens A) get to stay here, B) don't have good reason to take their anchor babies out of the country, and C) get a a pass for all the identity theft, tax fraud, and criminal conspiracies they've taken part in.

A few years ago, Perry said he supported Vicente Fox's vision of an open border. If what he's proposed were ever enacted, that would pretty much be the result.

Why not make the employers find and employ U.S. Citizens and residents for these jobs instead of outsourcing them to visiting aliens? Or does Governor Perry believe that reducing jobs for U.S. Citizens and residents will reduce unemployment?

Nobody wants to admit it, but those most responsible for hiring illegal immigrants are themselves either illegal immigrants or anchor babies. Or they are legal immigrants. Remember that most illegal immigrants have no English and so the people who hire them must be fluent in their language.

We need to increase the consequences for enabling illegal immigration against those who are not citizens. If you are not a citizen and you hire an illegal immigrant, you need to be deported along with the person you hired.

I got your point, that's why Find and employ certified citizens. maybe in the future lawmakers will think of your idea and study it so it can be applied
